A Remarkable Day – HRA Captains Day and Teams Challenge Shield – 6th April 2014
This traditional opener to the County shooting season attracted record entries this year, when 22 competitors entered the individual Captains Day competition shot over Queen’s I rules.
The numbers almost doubled for the afternoon where seven Club teams provided 39 shooters, a splendid show of support for the county. Weather was overcast with some drizzle and tricky variable winds all day, keeping scores notably low.
Individual Captains Day Prize Competition
Shot at 300, 500 and 600 yards, Captains Day offers a handicapped format enabling improving shooters to pit their skills against internationals and regular County team members. Prizes are also available for Top Gun scores without handicap.
WPRC were able to field an impressive ten members this year. The Club have had several successes in the past but none equal to what was to unfold in 2014. For starters, Ashley, Richard and James filled the first three places in the main Captains Day handicapped event. Not satisfied with this, the Gun Score competition was won by Colin with Richard and James finishing again in 2nd and 3rd places, leaving two Internationals and several current County shots in their wake.
Ashley Coleman-Cooke | Placed 1st |
Richard Malet | Placed 2nd |

Top Gun Score
Colin Skellett | Placed 1st | 101.10 |

What an amazing result!
Herts Clubs Teams Challenge Shield
Following the successful morning program, seven Club teams assembled in the afternoon to shoot over 300 and 600 yards. Some clubs were pressed to field a full team of six and as customary on this day, some sharing took place to ensure everyone got a shoot. As a result the team scores were to be assessed taking best 5 scores from 6.
WPRC team captain Alistair Bullen took the bold decision to select two equal strength five-man teams from the club squad of 10, rather than electing to have a strong ‘A’ team and considerably weaker ‘B’ team.
His selection was perfect. WPRC ‘A’ finished in first place narrowly beating WPRC ‘B’ into second. Also bagging Top Gun in the afternoon with 99.12, Alistair and his men completed a remarkable clean sweep and underlined the Clubs position as top club in Hertfordshire.
Team results were as follows:
Welwyn Phoenix ‘A’ | 464.35 | Colin Skellett | 97.7 |
