HRA Captains Day and Teams Challenge Shield – Sunday 2nd April 2017

This traditional opener to the Hertfordshire County shooting season provides two competitions. An individual Captains Day event is run in the morning using a handicapped format to encourage shooters of all ability to enter. The Captains Day prize is given to the competitor with the highest handicapped score and a prize for the best gun score is also up for grabs. This year due to lack of targets at 500 yards, we used a 2&10 at 300 and 600 yards format.

WPRC fielded 6 entrants out of the 16 in the individual morning competition. With half of the field matching or beating their handicaps used to ‘level the playing field’, our own Richard Malet finished in first place. It was a satisfying 1:2 for WPRC, with Ashley Coleman-Cooke in runners up 2nd position.

It was another WPRC 1:2 in the Gun Score competition with Colin Skellett, County Captain, carding a 98.14, squeezing Richard Malet into runners up spot on V-Bull count with his 98.5.

In the afternoon the Herefordshire Club Teams Challenge Shield was shot at 300 and 600yds. The entry attracted only three teams this year, all however sporting six team members.

Fine weather prevailed throughout the weekend with light but tricky wind changes ‘around the pole’. Ashley Coleman Cooke and Colin Skellett were thrown into the front line as wind coaches and did an excellent job resulting in a clear club win by 16 points.

As organising club Welwyn Phoenix retained the Shield, ensuring yet again that we have to plan the 2018 event which is always the downside of winning this match!

The WPRC team comprised:

Alistair Bullen
Ashley Coleman-Cooke
Richard Malet
Nick Verduyn
Bob Jackson
Colin Skellett
