HRA Captains Day and Teams Challenge Shield – Sunday 7th April 2024
HRA Captains Day and Teams Challenge Shield – Sunday 6th April 2025
With sun and blue skies from Dawn to Dusk, this traditional opener to the Hertfordshire County shooting season was blessed, despite quickly changing and strong wind conditions early on.
The Captains Day prize Salver, is given to the competitor with the highest handicapped score and a prize for the best gun score is also up for grabs.
This year the course of fire was revised to just two distances, 2 & 10 at 300 and 600 yards. With the strong and variable winds, high scores were very difficult to find.
WPRC fielded 8 entrants out of a full field of 14 competitors. In this individual handicapped morning competition, Welwyn Phoenix had a great morning, with Club Secretary Ashley Coleman-Cooke scooping the silverware. Club Captain Alistair Bullen and Club President Bob Jackson taking 2nd and 3rd places. A clean sweep was completed with Alistair winning the top gun score and a bottle of Malt.

In the afternoon the Herefordshire Club Teams Challenge Shield was shot at a single 600 yard distance with a 2 & 20 course of fire. This year’s entry attracting four teams of six shooters.
The testing wind continued into the afternoon, ensuring low scores and V-
counts.
Competition was fierce with some excellent controlled shooting. With a stronger 600 yard performance WPRC opened up a small gap of only 5 points over North Herts Rifles to win the Challenge Shield trophy, again with the dubious honour of arranging next years event.
